Chapter 11

* * *

Coco was bored out of her mind. She hated opera but Giovanni loved it. They’d had an early dinner, and then he’d “surprised” her with Madama Butterfly. What she wouldn’t give for an ice-cold beer and some game footage right now.

Coco was passionate about five things; family, medicine, football, Mexican food, and chocolate. Since opera wasn’t one of those, it was hard to get excited about a bunch of people yell-singing really loudly. In her book, opera was almost as bad as ballet. Then again, ballet wasn’t anywhere near as loud, so she could nap.

A white-makeup-faced woman came out onstage and belted out a song so loud it shook the roof. Coco glanced up at the ceiling, wondering what the casualty total would be if it did give way. She eyed the exits so she could direct others toward them and calculated how long it would take her to get to one. She analyzed the crowd. On the whole, Austin was a pretty fit city, but the average person couldn’t tell that by looking at these folks. The man with the cane two rows up and four seats to the left would be the first one she helped out, and then the woman in the red dress five rows ahead and to the right. She glanced down her row. The lady in the blue dress was asleep, so everyone would have to step over her because based on the amount of time it had taken her to sit down, she would be the last one out. Two rows behind her, a man who’d arrived wearing a top hat—yes, an actual top hat—wore a shoulder brace from a recent shoulder surgery. He might not need help, but he certainly couldn’t help anyone.

Giovanni smiled at her and took her hand.

Could she count on him to help if the ceiling collapsed? He had a good heart, but he wasn’t great at noticing what needed to be done on his own. He was always happy to help once she pointed out what needed his help.

The orchestra in the pit would probably be safe, and the ceiling over the stage, what little she could see of it, looked sturdier than in the auditorium. No, the audience was in greater danger. A man in a dark-green bowtie limped down the aisle on the arm of a blonde who could be his great-granddaughter. He took a step and then stopped to rest and then another step followed by a break. It was like he was walking the blonde down the aisle to meet her bridegroom. Coco wondered if he realized that this wasn’t a wedding.

She revised her plan. Green bowtie, then cane man, and then red dress.

Giovanni kissed her cheek and whispered, “My favorite part is coming up. This is one of my favorite operas.”

Good Lord, he’d seen this one before? Why the heck would he want to see it again?

He squeezed her hand to let her know that his favorite part had started.
